After we walked up the esplanade of Redcliffe, we were welcomed to country and then listen to various speakers discuss local issues with domestic violence including a survivor's story. Zonta International Convention, Brisbane
What a wonderful experience! How excited we were to attend and participate in the Zonta International Convention held this biennial in Brisbane, Australia.
Day 1: 27 June
We attended the opening of convention including a welcome to Country and flag ceremony. First time convention attendees include Susan, Lynda and Lyn from Zonta Club of Caboolture. We participated in a walk against violence at Southbank, South Brisbane. At the end of the walk was a sausage sizzle and cold drink. Some locals asked us why we were all dressed in orange. We told them we were all members of Zonta and walking against domestic violence and that our mission was to build a better world for women and girls.
At the end of the day we attended the announcement of the campaign to combine the three Australian districts into one country district, Australia.
Day 2: 28 June
On Friday the keynote presentation was presented by Rabia Siddique. What an amazing lady. So inspiring. Reports were presented and speeches made by award recipients. The scholars were remarkable and dedicated to making a difference being empowered women. Day 3: 29 June Workshops continued and so too did the business sessions getting down to the business of running Zonta International. The Masterclass with Rabia Siddique focused on leading under pressure. Social Change Through Collective Campaigning shared the story of Citizen Tasmania undertaking a collective project to reduce domestic violence in Tasmania. Their campaign was called "None a Week". Lisa Blair was inspirational sharing her personal story. Finishing with recognition of long term membership, meritorious service and excellence in service and advocacy. We look forward to the next convention in Vancouver, Canada in 2026.
One of the highlights of conference was meeting fellow Zontians from all around the world. Everyone swapped badges and trinkets representing their country. Everyone was friendly and passionate about making a difference. It was a very unique experience. |
